Hansen Reed has the Common Sense for Monterey

Dear Friends:

Well, I am running for Monterey City Council in November's election. As a Monterey native, longtime community volunteer, attorney and Planning Commissioner, I thought it was time to either sit down at the table or shut up. Monterey needs an active community leader at the table. I believe I have what it takes, and that's why I am asking for your help. + as a contributor, volunteer, endorser and, of course, as a voter.

You may be asking why now? What really made me decide to file is the need to get a 1-cent special sales tax measure approved by the voters. Monterey's streets, sidewalks and storm drains are in critical disrepair. Over the past few decades, city resources have gone to areas that serve tourism + our No. 1 economic driver + but the neighborhood streets have been neglected. Even the recent discussion among city leaders has been disjointed on the issues. It was compelling enough for me to think that Common Sense for Monterey is needed. I think I can bring that to City Hall.

I believe I can make a difference on the critical issues this community has to face:

Water supply. For far too long, the Peninsula's various water and wastewater agencies, cities, special districts and the County have been protecting their turf instead of working together to provide a sustainable, affordable water supply. State water officials are about to restrict Cal Am's ability to take water from the Carmel River. If that happens, Monterey and its neighboring cities will suffer economic disaster. As I stated above, Monterey's infrastructure has deteriorated to the point the arteries and pipes need major open-heart surgery. The tax measure is the way to go, and it may need to be extended after the four-year sunset. That means another vote. In the meantime, I am supporting the measure and, if elected, I will make sure the $8 million a year it will generate is used properly. The Conference Center renovation, revitalization of Old Town, the Waterfront Master Plan, and the North Fremont Street modernization are all issues that I am familiar with and eager to tackle. I feel that I am qualified and have the background to serve on the City Council. I grew up in Monterey before moving with my parents + two longtime teachers + Don and Helen Reed + to eastern Washington. I received a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, and I am a graduate of the Monterey College of Law. I am the managing partner of Walker and Reed law firm, specializing in transactional law. My wife, Amy Cruzan Reed, is director of Camp Quien Sabe, where I also spent my childhood as my parents ran the summer camp for the city. We have two children, Emily and Mason. My community service includes heading the volunteers of Monterey Rotary Club for the annual car auctions during Classic Car Week and serving as president of the Central Coast YMCA.

Monterey is a wonderful community, endowed with world-class attractions. I want to maintain that and plan for its future. To continue working on that future, I need your support for election.
