South County academic needs
San Luis Obispo County population demographics fundamentally divides the county into thirds. North has approximately 32.16%, Central 37.80% and South 30.04%. However course offering by the college do not mirror those percentages. Last year's scheduled courses at North county was 24%, Central 66.10% and South 5.20%, with distance ed/online courses at 4.70%.
The majority of the course offerings in South County are located on the Arroyo Grande High School campus, which limits Cuesta's ability to grow. Students from the South County are forced to drive the 30/40 mile round trip 2 to 3 times a week to take the courses they need. This creates a hardship on students given the high cost of gas, which will continue to increase. It is esential that the board re-evaluate its capital building plan and look for solutions to address South County's needs.
