I moved to Hastings because of the schools; not because of test scores, but because of the feeling I got when I toured the grade school and spoke with administrators and teachers. I now have a child in middle school and a child in the grade school. I tend to use most of my mental energy thinking about and dealing with my children's experience at school. Among other things, I worry about how federal and state testing mandates will affect education in the district. I worry that money concerns will cause us to make changes that are not beneficial to the children. So I'd like to do more than worry, and do my part and have some impact, if possible.
In terms of qualifications, I think caring deeply, as I do about the children's education, and being willing to put the time and effort in is probably enough qualification for anybody. In addition to this, I am educated as an attorney (albeit not currently practicing) and was editor-in-chief of my school's Law Review (New York Law School 1995). Before law school, marriage and motherhood, I worked for a number of years in magazine publishing and was Photo Research Editor at Vanity Fair. So I feel I am qualified from the standpoint of working collaboratively with others on vital projects and leading when necessary.
