I have been a resident of Union City for over 3 decades. I grew up in the Bay Area and attended public schools. I received my college education from the University of San Francisco, and my graduate degree from Wichita State University. My two grown children are products of the New Haven Unified School District. My son is an attorney who is licensed to practice in multiple states. My daughter is a veteran high school teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District.
I have been active in the New Haven School District. I have served on several committees and task forces, as well as serving as School site council chairperson for two different school site councils at the same time. I have been a tutor and mentor for many years. I also have served as a school volunteer for at-risk students. I created two programs-PIECES, and POSSE, both of which were for Middle School children who were in need of after school support.
I was elected to the New Haven Board of Education in 1994, and served until 2010. During my tenure on the School Board, I served as Board President for three consecutive years, as well as Board Clerk. I was the first Board member to complete the Masters in Governance Program offered through the California School Boards Association. I also served for 10 years as a member of their Delegate Assembly, and one term as a member of their Board of Directors.
I was President of the California Coalition of Black School Board Members for 8 years, the longest any member of the organization has served.
While a member of the New Haven School Board, I gave away
scholarships to seniors at JLHS and CCHS .
