San Jose's graduation rates need to be addressed especially in terms of our new high tech career world
While public safety has taken the center stage of this campaign the most pressing issue in San Jose is really the educational crisis. In recent years the city of San Jose has left educational issues to the school districts and to the Santa Clara Office of Education. It is clear that we can no longer stay uninvolved in the realm of education. We must actively support and integrate city services with the rest of the educational community. San Jose needs to help provide afterschool programs at libraries and community centers that actively support local youth at a level well beyond what has been done in the past. We must redouble our efforts to make certain that each and every student has a full schedule of activities after school every day and on weekends. From academics to vocational training to sports activities there should be no reason that any child should need to join a gang or get into criminal activity. We must invest in our greatest asset which is our children who are our future. We need to make sure every student has a real chance to succeed in our high tech world. We should start teaching software development by the third grade. Why should we import talent from all over the world when we have so much untapped talent getting overlooked and underutilized in our local schools? We must take the time, money, energy and thought to invest in the youth of San Jose. I propose a local Manhattan Project to inspire, educate and invest in our kids. SAN JOSE CARES.
