Vision for the FutureAs only the second woman in the City's 105-year history to serve on the City Council, I am pleased to see more women step up to serve in leadership positions. As a native Californian and a South San Francisco resident for the past 33 years, I have watched us evolve into a diversified and multicultural city that we can all be proud of. While we are considered the biotech capital of the United States, we must not forget our rich blue-collar heritage as we move forward into the future. With the loss of "redevelopment" funds for eradicating blight and providing workforce housing and jobs, we have to be creative and seek other opportunities to revitalize not only the "downtown" but other parts of the city. It is said that by 2030, sixty percent of the County's population will be over 60 years old. We need to begin to prepare for this inevitability by building walkable mixed-use communities along public transportation corridors. We must have affordable housing so families can live and work in South San Francisco for generations to come. An integral part of this growth is an healthy environment. We must be sure to encourage sustainable practices and protect open spaces. Please join with me to build for the future while honoring our past. |
