Community Outreach

By Karyl Matsumoto

Candidate for Council Member; City of South San Francisco; 2 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
An important measure of a city is how it treats and engages its residents.
When I am longer on Council, I will be pleased to look back and note that during my tenure I was responsible for co-founding two very worthwhile city programs.

First, the City's Community Outreach Program, a partnership with the City Council and Fire Department to bring together residents, businesses and advocacy groups to:

  • reduce the sense of isolation for the elderly
  • teach persons with special needs and their caregivers how to seek safety in an emergency;
  • provide financially disadvantaged students (K-5) with school supplies and backpacks;
  • honor veterans and support the military and their families by adopting Echo Company 23rd Marines; hold special Memorial Day ceremonies in SSF; and support the USO at the SSF Airport.

Second, Improving Public Places, a group of over 225 volunteers who are dedicated to taking care of city landscapes. This group of dedicated volunteers includes individuals from school-age children to seniors and city employees who volunteer their time and expertise. They help design landscapes, obtain donations for materials and assist in cleaning and planning targeted outdoor spaces to improve our quality of life. To date, as a result of their efforts, over $300,000 has been saved by the City.

Assemblyman Kevin Mullin when he was Mayor officially registered South San Francisco as a City of Service. INDEED WE ARE!
