I believe our community, our State, our World is made better when our children are educated. As a parent of two young children in the California public schools, I have a personal stake in the future of California's educational system. From Elementary to Post-secondary education, institutions must have the resources needed to provide a balanced and adequate curriculum. These must include music and the arts. I will work so that our children have access to a free and appropriate fully accessible world-class public education.
Crucially important to providing a world-class public education is making sure that our children are remaining in school. Measure AB 2617 is aimed at curbing high school drop-out rates. I will fight for and sponsor similar bills to make sure that our children are completing their education.
I will fight so that our children have access to all content areas; not just math and science, but also physical education, the arts, and foreign languages. I will work so that they have access to community college and university-level opportunities and that those come at minimal expense.
Both schools and teachers need to be held accountable, so I will work to support measures to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of administrators, teachers, schools, and districts. I will make sure that all schools are held to the same set of standards, and they are offering the same opportunities to students regardless of race, skill level, economic status, and/or special needs. State Assembly Measure AB 2491 makes great strides in that arena, as it allows students of color and lower social-economic status to have the same opportunities presented to them as other gifted children.
