Grow Small Businesses, Broadband Access, UCSC Technology Transfer, bring Human Genome Institute to UCSC.
Santa Cruz's communications infrastructure is at a competitive disadvantage. A county wide high bandwidth fiber network would be transformative. This could fill the more than 300,000 square feet of vacant commercial space and could generate 1000-2000 jobs. i support the adoptions of policies that lower the barriers to install this resource in principal commercial areas of the city. Under my leadership, we will attempt to bring the Human Genome Project Institute to UCSC. We are in a good position currently to be chosen, as the initial coding by Professor Haussler happened at UCSC. As you read this, MIT, Johns Hopkins and a few of the other big Universities are bargaining for the Institute to be housed at their institutions, why? Because where ever it is housed, the worlds leading scientists will come to work, study, eat and stay in hotels! This is only part of the UCSC Technology Transfer-commercialization of the research and inventions developed can create partnerships ranging from support services to business incubation centers. This will put Santa Cruz on the map and bridge the gap between UCSC and the City of Santa Cruz!
I support this community in growing small businesses like NextSpace and Cruzio. The tech industry is the next big industry, we should not miss this opportunity as we did in the past, our best and brightest should not have to drive over the hill to go to work.
