Fiscal ResponsibilityBy Gary TomakCandidate for Board Member; Desert Sands Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
School Board Members have a responsibility to spend taxpayer dollars wisely and efficiently.Desert Sands has remained fiscally sound throughout my tenure on the school board. I continue to remain an active member of the district's financial committee. I have been part of a team representing Desert Sands which successfully acquired an improved school bond financial rating and is currently ranks one of the best in California. This translates to lower interest rates for our construction projects and reduced costs to taxpayers. I promoted plans for the conversion of our school bus fleet from diesel to natural gas. This has not only reduced fuel costs but promotes a cleaner environment. Additionally, we are currently working to increase the use of solar power and reduce energy costs. Most importantly, as the California budget crisis has threatened to severely impact school budgets, I supported inviting the community to participate in open budget study sessions to offer suggestions for budget cuts which would least impact student achievement. |
