Berkeley has a unique position to become hub for the Bay Area's green tech industry which would create thousands of jobs.Berkeley has been ranked as one of the top five cities best situated to lead the "Clean Tech" economy and Southwest Berkeley is in a unique position to become home to much of Berkeley's Green industry. Bringing Green industry into the City will not only expand the City's tax base to pay for services in District 2, but could employ a large number of Southwest Berkeley residents. According to a recent study by the Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges, half of the top 10 fastest growing biotech occupations in California require on-the-job training only . Along with jobs, this industry can also bring with it significant community benefits: improvements to West Berkeley's transportation infrastructure; job training opportunities that will make our workforce ready for life-long careers; and affordable housing. Welcoming these sectors will not only contribute to making the world a better place, but will also be a fantastic way to reinvigorate our industrial sector. I have made a major effort to push for policies to attract these types of clean industries while protecting traditional manufacturing and helping grow the Southwest Berkeley artist/artisan communities. |
