Our youth are our community's future and if we do not ensure their success then we are betraying our tomorrow. Each year, I renew my commitment to our youth by welcoming incoming Rosa Parks Elementary students with backpacks and school supplies so they can begin the school year ready to learn. The first day of school is difficult time for both children and parents. I try to make it a pleasant and memorable experience for the kids by welcoming them with a bag full of goodies while, at the same time, taking a step to ease the financial burden on their families. We also have to ensure that our youth have opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom. This is why I am proud to have introduced legislation that significantly expands the City's youth employment program, YouthWorks. Previously the City was only able to accommodate approximately a third of those who applied; now we accommodate each and every applicant who walks through YouthWorks' doors. I worked with United in Action to help draft the 2020 Vision, a comprehensive plan to eliminate the academic achievement gap in our schools by the year 2020, and co-authored the resolution to bring it before the City Council. Now I'm working to bring together the School District, the City, the non-profit sector, and the community to ensure that it is properly implemented. These sectors have worked very closely over the past few years to ensure that we are on course for our year 2020 goal, but there is still much to do. |
