Born in Wisconsin, I grew up in Southern Illinois. I recieved my bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois and did graduate work in political science at Cal State Long Beach where I was a graduate assistant in the department. For 10 years I was a City Staff reporter for The Daily Breeze before enrolling in graduate school. After graduate school, I became a deputy probation officer for Los Angeles County, working at Juvenile Hall, Las Palmas School for Girls, the Long Beach area office and the Harbor area office in Torrance. I worked for the county for 25 years, the last 20 years in the Torrance office. I was an adult supervision officer and supervised narcotic offenders and persons who were a threat to children. As a probation officer, I was active in my union, Los Angeles County Probation Officers Local 685, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFL-CIO)and served as secretary of that organization. I hold memberships in the retiree chapters of AFSCME and SEIU. Since my retirement, I have been involved in a variety of community programs. At present I serve on the Redondo Beach Recreation and Parks Commission. Previously I served on the Library Commission and the Public Improvement Commission. I served as president of the Friends of the Redondo Beach Public Library. My commitment to health of our community led me to serve on the Community Health Committee of Beach Cities Health District. That also resulted in my being involved in the South Bay Coalition on Homeless. For several years I was a volunteer at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. A strong supporter of the Inter Faith community in the area, I am an active member of Pacific Unitarian Church where I have serve on its board and now on the Stewardship Committee. I was first elected to County Committee in 1976 and was a delegate to the 1980 Democratic National Convention. Because of family and work obligations, I dropped out for a while, returning in th 1990s. I served on the Rules Committee for the 2000 Democratic National Convention. As a County Committee member, I serve on the California Democratic Cenetral Committee and on its Credentials Committee. My first appointment to that committee was made by Nancy Pelosi when she was state party chair. I have served in campaigns for Secretary of State Debra Bowen, Assemblywoman Betsy Butler and State Senator Ted Lieu. Past campaigns included the late Assemblyman George Gordon, the late State Senator Jenny Oropeza, and former Assemblyman George Nakano. Also I was a member of the "kitchen cabinet" for Former Congresswoman Jane Harman. I am now involved in Al Murarsuchi's campaign for State Assembly. Also I have been involved in helping in local campaigns for President Barack Obama in 2008 and the state party ticket in 2010 headed by Gov. Jerry Brown. I have served five terms as president of Beach Cities Democratic Club. Finally, I serve on the board of Omnilore, a learning in retirement program in coordination with Cal State Dominguez Hills where retired professionals keep their minds active through peer taught class in all fields of knowledge. My community involvement is an inheritance from my parents. My Dad taught us that we should leave the world a little better than we found it and my siblings and I followed that path. |
