Clean It or Lien ItForeclosed homes negatively impact our community in multiple ways. They become breeding grounds for crime, health and fire hazards, eyesores, and they bring down the neighborhoods house value. Modesto has been hit hard with the foreclosure crisis and it is time we do something about it. Cities such as Chula Vista and Murrieta have implemented residential property abandonment programs that hold lenders accountable for their foreclosed properties while protecting citizens. Such programs require the lenders to register their properties with the city, then they must maintain their properties to neighborhood standards. The registration fee for the lenders is $70 a property, which in Modesto could easily raise over $40,000. Lenders can also be fined from $100 to $1000 a day for not registering or maintaining their properties. The program has been so beneficial in Chula Vista that they have been contacted by over 150 cities interested in duplicating the program. It is time Modesto does the same. We need to hold lenders accountable and protect our citizens. |
