Outsourcing

It's not making dollars and it doesn't make sense.
Cities and government organizations across the nation have been moving towards privatization in these tough economic times. Modesto has already jumped on this band wagon of privatization and outsourcing without giving enough thought to the long term effects.

There have been numerous privatization disasters. The best known around here is the disaster that occurred when Stockton privatized their water supply. However, since those that support privatization generally focus strictly on dollars and not on service, I will do the same.

The Program on Government Oversight recently conducted a study of 35 federal job classifications, covering more than 550 service activities. In 33 of the 35 job classifications studied, the average contractor billing rate was significantly steeper than the average compensation for federal employees. The two jobs where it was more cost-effective to hire contractors were groundskeeper and medical records technician.

When most projects are bid on, they may look good in the short term, but we need to look at the big picture. The big picture is that privatization is costing our us.
