By Judy Jones

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 73

This information is provided by the candidate
Education should be accessible and affordable for all Californians. It is my highest priority because edcation is the foundation of innnovation and technology leadership that will move California forward in the future.
California needs to increase, not decrease the per student spending; we are ranked 48th in the nation in per student spending and that is embarrassing. When I joined the Peace Corps I was teaching math to help a developing nation catch up in math and science; now it looks like we need the help. Community colleges are a necessary investment for our future; community colleges train our nurses, firefighters, technicians, and police, and they give struggling full time working people a chance to improve themselves. To be economically competitive in the 21st California must regain its status as the best education system in America, and support workforce skills at all levels of the economy.

California's education systems must do the following to invest in our future:

  • Provide free, quality public education in a clean and safe environment for all of California's children.
  • Raise Califonria standards in math, science and computer technologies in order to compete in an ever changing technological world,
  • Reward students excelling in math, science and computer technologies with grants and/or scholarships to California universities and colleges, especially if they are willing to teach for at least two years after graduating.
  • Roll back the tuition increases at CSU and UC systems.
  • Support expansion of the California Community Colleges because they not only offer a start to those who can't afford the UC system but also because they train our nurses, firemen and police.
  • Compensate teachers well since they are our student's conduit to the future
  • Expand after school programs to aggressively counter gang influences.
  • Encourage businesses to participate in the education system by offering tax incentives.
