Bond Issue Other ApproachesThe Bond Measure is an effort to provide more local funds for our schools. People may not know that the state guarantees a certain amount of money per student per day. Property tax funds have been rising in Cloverdale, but the schools do not get more funds, rather the state decreases the amount it pays. Therefore, the only way to have more local money is with passage of a parcel tax or a bond measure. A parcel tax would be more flexible as to the use of funds, but the bonds can at least provide better facilities. In particular, we can use the bonds to install a solar system and make our energy use more efficient, thus increasing funds available for teachers and programs. A parcel tax was deemed too difficult to pass, and for this reason the present Board has chosen a Bond measure. Other areas of action are to inform legislators of the effects of their actions on our children, be more frugal as a way of life, and try to have policies that are equitable in order to keep legal costs at a minimum. We can encourage parents to keep their children in our local schools and to reduce absenteeism. We should try to find expertise within our community to avoid hiring outsiders. |
