Educational Achievement at AUHSD for allBy Jose Luis "Joe" MorenoCandidate for Board Member; Anaheim Union High School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
It took former President Bush and an "Act of Congress" to finally make many school districts throughout our country accountable for raising student achievement. The law "No Child Left Behind" was/is a success but the theory behind it is simple and obvious---By requiring local school districts to set high expectations on students and requiring measurable student achievement goals, students will do better academically. Why did it take a federal government mandate to do what should have already been done locally? I have always fully supported the 2001 NCLB law and will always support any legislation that strengthens, preserves, and protects it. Furthermore, I understand that while this legislation and similar like minded legislation are important pieces of the "How to raise student achievement?" puzzle, others deserve "thanks". To the many highly effective and committed teachers, educationally focused parents, and committed school staff and administration, which have all played an important part in raising student achievement I will pledge to work to make the entire Anaheim Union High School District nationally renowned by raising the educational achievement of all its students. The sad reality is that our school system is failing many students. Too many students are falling in between the cracks, dropping out entirely, failing to pass the California High School Equivalency Examination (2009-2010 passing rate for Anaheim Union High School District 64% English 68% Math)which is required for graduation or coming up short in the required units needed for graduation. Even when graduating, there are too many students, most often low-income and/or Latino, that are lagging significantly behind their counterparts in educational achievement. They leave AUHSD unprepared to not have to take remedial community college classes, unable to secure an employment position that affords them a livable wage, or even avoid becoming a burden to our state's welfare or penal system. I acknowledge the problems of our school system and I will work hard to make my goal a reality...educational achievement at AUHSD for all. |
