Reconnecting City Council and CitizensBy Kim McIntoshCandidate for Council Member; City of Brentwood | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Feel out of touch with City Council? Disagree with some of the decisions that have been made? I will work to increase connection, communication and cooperation between citizens and city council! We are all busy working, managing our budgets in tough economic times, raising children, participating in activities or enjoying retirement, and don't make it to council meetings or serve in community focus groups. It is vital that our city council knows what the marjority of residents think, not just the small segment that is able participate in council business. Brentwood government has a goal of increasing communication online for residents to request and comment about city services. That is a great idea that needs to be expanded to include city council. Our city council needs to further it's use of technology to connect with more citizens, and to give citizens the opportunity to comment, ask questions, and voice their concerns in a way that's more immediate and dynamic. City council can explore the use of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or blogs to connect with people in a less formal and more fluid and immediate way. But the best way to promote goodwill between the council and constituents is in person. If elected to serve on the city council, I expect to go out and regularly connect with businesses, active-adult community, invididuals, community organizations, churches, non-profit groups and schools on an informal basis. I'd like to wear an identifying lapel pin or name tag so that people recognize me as a city council memeber wherever I am in the community. I want to carry a form that can be filled out and mailed to give to people if I can't stay and write down their concerns personally. Running a city is like a business, but city council members need to remember the heart of Brentwood, which is the wonderful people who live here. We have to care for our heart so that our city stays healthy, vibrant and able to face challenges! |
