Candidate for
Member of the State Assembly; District 11; Democratic Party

Susan A. Bonilla was elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, District IV, in November 2006. The District includes Concord, Clayton, Pleasant Hill and a portion of Walnut Creek.

Susan's priority on the Board of Supervisors is to modernize our county government and create accountability and transparency and improve the delivery of programs and services to you.

Since joining the Board of Supervisors Susan has advocated for a two year budget cycle to create flexibility and enable strategic thinking to take place to anticipate and plan for downturns in the economy.

She also believes the County must adopt strategic financial priorities, review and enact employee cost-saving suggestions, and streamline the organizational structure.

Susan has been a strong advocate for health care reform and has voted in support of county resolutions to support state efforts to enact universal health care. She created Contra Costa County's Health Care Principles of Action, a tool for our County's various health care providers to advocate for health care reform.

Economic development and job creation is a priority for Susan. She recently created the Foster Youth Employment Program which provides youth in the county foster system job opportunities within the county structure. Also, Susan successfully recruited the California State Automobile Association to move their Northern California Headquarters to the Contra Costa Centre and is overseeing the construction of the Contra Costa Centre transit village.

An advocate for government partnerships with non-profits and businesses, Susan administers the Contra Costa Future Fund, a new and innovative public/private partnership that provides grants to non-profits to deliver services to our community while requiring taxpayer savings and/or tangible benefits to our local economy.

Before her election to the Board of Supervisors, Susan was a member of the Concord City Council, serving as Mayor in 2006. In her time on the Concord City Council, she initiated the Literacy Coalition which serves as a network of literacy providers dedicated to raising the awareness of literacy needs and mobilizing volunteers to meet these needs.

As Mayor, Susan organized and led a local coalition in negotiations and discussions with the Department of Navy regarding the reuse of the Concord Naval Weapons Station.

Prior to holding elected office, Susan was a high school English teacher in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. She and her husband John live in Concord and have four daughters and a granddaughter.
