Lou Calcagno has a proven record of fiscal stabiltiy.As chair of the Board's Finance Committee, Lou established a three-year budgeting philosophy and a strategic reserve that has grown to $38 million. He holds County department heads accountable to manage their budgets so that they maintain high levels of service and eliminate unnecessary spending and wasteful programs. Under his leadership, Monterey County was able to avoid layoffs, upgrade its bond rating to AA and actually save taxpayers over $1.4 million in interest payments. The biggest success story of this past decade has to be the financial turnaround at Natividad hospital. For years, Natividad operated at a deficit. Under Lou's guidance, the Board retained a team of turnaround specialists, who came in and immediately showed results. The turnaround has saved taxpayers millions. |
