Born in Los Angeles, California in 1960 to Peruvian parents who became citizens in 1967. Sal grew up in East and South Central Los Angeles before moving to Gardena, California. He attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance where he was a class representative and Chair of the High School Speech and Debate Club. Sal attended UCLA from 1978 to 1983 where he majored in Psychology and obtained a student teacher credential. After teaching 3rd grade in Los Angeles, Sal worked for the City of Los Angeles in the Rent Control Division. In 1985, Sal moved to San Francisco to attend the University of San Francisco, Kendrick Hall School of Law where he graduated with distinction receiving the Judge Harold J Haley Award given by the law school's faculty as well as the Student Bar Association Award bestowed by his classmates for his contributions to the school and the surrounding community.He is STILL the only graduate to receive both awards at graduation! Sal has been an attorney since 1989 and is also a real estate broker. Presently, in addition to his duties on the City Council, Sal is employed in the legal department of Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., one of the world's leaders in semiconductor chips, as the Managing Corporate Counsel of the Commercial Transactions Group. He supervises a staff of professional and para-professionals and oversees major complex agreements. Sal and his wife, Leslie, a registered nurse, also raise their two children, ages 9 and 5 and care for Leslie's 86 year old mother. |
