Raising Academic Achievement

By Jim B. Logsdon

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Cruz City High School District; Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
We now have several schools in our district who are not attaining dictates of "No Child Left Behind," even though we know those standards are misleading.
As a former school superintendent in predominately poor schools and communities. I've had a good deal of experience in improving standardized test scores. Bay View School has recently demonstrated exceptional competence in overcoming poverty and language barriers to overcome sanctions that "No Child Left Behind," had imposed on the school. I think that much the same kind of hard work and cooperation can be infused into the schools in our district who are still under sanctions. I would hope that I'd be able to work with all of our schools to provide a first class education for all of our students regardless of family economic status and language handicaps. My daughter graduated from Santa Cruz High School with honors and attended UC Davis on full scholarship. I believe that our public schools can do just as good a job as private and charter schools in getting our students into superior colleges and universities.
