English Language Learners

By Jim B. Logsdon

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Cruz City High School District; Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
Approximately 25% of our student body is comprised of English Language Learners. Acquiring a second language is very difficult, usually taking at least three to five years to attain proficiency in the second language.
I have written funded categorical programs serving the needs of Spanish speaking children. The City Schools now have well tested programs that get results in terms of English proficiency, including the "Dual Immersion Program." I would work tirelessly with all facets of our educational community to continue to improve the speaking, reading and writing skills of our Hispanic children. By improving the English skills of these students, we will academically lift all boats.
