On my blog I reveal periodically my current experiences in running for local, public office to find out for myself and others how our democracy operates on the local level. So for those who may be interested, here is my blogspot: http://chc12.blogspot.comSo far I've found this campaign to be quite an adventure. See for yourself on my blog (New Board for Saddleback College). However, I wouldn't be running unless I felt strongly about the issues at hand. If I do gain the Area 7 seat it will be an indication that one doesn't have to be a slick politician, have a lot of connections, have significant money, or the backing of special interests in order to serve in a democracy. (Remember that regardless of which area of the South Orange County Community College District the voter lives in, he/she may vote for one trustee candidate in each of the four areas out of seven that are up for election.) One obvious example of how devoted some of our citizenry are to the tenets of democracy is this opportunity that I have been given of getting my message out through the League of Women Voters and their Smart Voter program. In a larger sense it means that our democracy can work and does work because of those who give of themselves for the sake of our society as a whole. |
