FIX Student Achievement ~ No More Class CutsBy John BriscoeCandidate for Board Member; Huntington Beach Union High School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
For LIVE Video Clip go to:Student Achievement Our schools serve all children with all needs. Severely handicapped have special programs as do English Learners and moderately disabled kids. College preparatory and Advanced Placement courses are unsurpassed. Students at either end of the ability spectrum are sell served in our schools. However, students in the middle are neglected. Most students are average by definition. And these average students need more help. While the State and District focus on college attendance, the true fact is over fifty percent of college students never complete their degree. Most students do not go on to earn a college degree. Most students will enter the workforce, marry, have children and lead an ordinary life without benefit of a college degree. These students need our focus and help. They must be directed into classes that will help them learn life skills for living alone including household and financial management. Vocational skills for use in everyday life would be beneficial for both girls and boys. Ordinary classes in history and English that enable students to understand the world around them will provide a framework for a lifetime. Instead, we are cutting vocational classes including wood shop from our schools. Children are routinely directed to college prep classes when LIFE PREP classes would serve them better. Parents and students should be consulted together with test scores and grades to determine their best course in high school. |
