LIVE Video Feed on Important Topic:Team Sports I am here to discuss our team sport programs and their impact on student achievement. Everybody is now familiar with the CAHSE test every high school student must take to graduate. Now California has a new law requiring all students take a physical fitness test in their sophomore year. The standards are rigorous. Failure to pass the PE test could result in two more years of mandatory PE. Today many students take only 2 years of PE in the freshman and sophomore years. During their last two years of high school they take college prep courses in order to attend the University of their choice. Other students use the extra time to work a part-time job to earn money for their family. If students are not physically fit enough to pass the test, they will all lose the opportunity of extra academic courses or job income. We all read about the obesity epidemic sweeping our country. Many children enter high school having spent many years as "latch key kids" alone at home after school while mom & dad are at work. They live under strict orders to stay in the house to avoid risk of accidents. And they get little physical activity. I believe we must encourage all entering freshmen students to consider team sports. Freshman team sports are guaranteed play and provide a rigorous demanding workout. One or two years of this strenuous athletic work can help assure passing the required PE test to graduate. I strongly support both girls and boys considering the fun and value of freshman and sophomore team sport participation. |
