I am a second generation Californian having moved to the Santa Clara Valley with my family in the 1960's. I attended public schools and graduated from what is now Santa Clara High School. I went to University of California at Berkeley and earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science with a special emphasis on Public Administration and Public Policy. I also hold an MBA in Finance from Golden Gate University. In the past four years I have been Sunnyvale's Mayor, Vice Mayor. Prior to my election to the city council, I served two years as a planning commissioner. My leadership work has led into a number of regional leadership roles and awards representing Sunnyvale and the region. I earned a National League of Cities "Silver Leadership Executive Award." I am the only municipal leader in Silicon Valley to have acheived this distinction and one of only eight in California. Other leadership roles include:
My work in the banking industry had spanned over 20 years providing loans and other banking services to local and regional high technology and life science companies. My experiences both in banking, and in a high technology manufacturing start-up, give me a working understanding of the full spectrum of business needs. More importantly, I understand the types of services that can help businesses and their employees, to be successful. I currently work as a Mortgage Loan Officer for a local mortgage company. As a councilmember, my education, professional and personal experiences are significant and much needed strengths that will help as Sunnyvale works through current fiscal responsibilities. Wilma, my wife, and I have two young children in Sunnyvale public schools. We are active in our neighborhood, and the local adoptive family community. I have the collaborative leadership experience and skills to bring community and commerce together to keep Sunnyvale the best city in the Bay Area in which to live, work and shop.
