While serving as a Board Trustee for the past six months I've thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to shape the future of our school district. As a mother of three Moreland students I have a vested interest in the future of the Moreland school district. I want to continue to guide the district during this time of positive change. Over the past six years I have developed a solid background and a broad perspective of the Moreland district through volunteer roles and work experience. I have a degree in Rhetoric and Communication from UC Davis and nearly 10 years experience in courseware development, technical writing, and management. However, the most valuable aspect of my experience is the perspective I have developed from a variety of roles within Moreland. For the past six years I have been volunteering in my children's classrooms and for the Country Lane Home and School Club. Specifically, I was CLH&SC president and served on the Superintendent's Presidents Council for two years. During this time the district faced mid-year budget reductions and a school merger. I became acutely aware of the unique financial parameters districts must work within and our community's priorities. I also saw first hand how the classrooms and school communities were impacted by the changes. In addition to representing my children's school, I was a member of the past two District Facilities Task Forces. Serving on these task forces educated me in district-wide issues such as enrollment projections and trends, the condition and configuration of Moreland facilities, and grade-level configurations. I also learned a great deal about other local districts. While I worked with school and district groups I also worked directly with our students through Project Cornerstone and as a part-time tutor and substitute teacher . In 2004, I participated in the CL Cornerstone Leadership parent workshop and served as an ABC Parent volunteer for 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade classes last year. After taking the Cornerstone leadership workshop, I worked with the school principal to start a student-run newspaper at Country Lane elementary school. The newspaper provides a venue for students develop both internal and external assets. Since organizing in 2004, we have published five issues and have a consistent staff of 20 to 30 students. For the two years prior to my School Board appointment, I worked within the Moreland School District as a tutor and substitute teacher. Through the Jumpstart intervention program I tutored third through fifth grade students in reading comprehension and writing. I also substituted for teachers at Anderson Village, Latimer, EDS, and Country Lane schools. I want to be part of a positive change for the district. I have the background and perspective to help guide the district during this time of tremendous change. |
