Why I am running for school board

Having spent decades working with children and adults, I am acutely aware of the enormous costs incurred culturally and financially when the educational system fails to meet their needs.

We can do better! We must do better!

As a single parent, Carpinteria has been our home for thirty years. My children, now adults, graduated from Carpinteria schools. For the past three years it has been a pleasure to be a mentor in one of Carpinteria's public elementary schools.

Last year, after becoming a guardian (Grandma) to a student with special needs, the school district staff worked with us to help my child make a successful adaptation to school. I continued to volunteer in the classroom and he had a wonderful year!

These are my priorities as a school board member:

• To keep all schools open.

• To improve communication between administration, educators, parents, students, and the community

• To implement a district-wide behavior policy that both rewards students for positive behavior and penalizes negative behavior. Children need structure to develop a sense of well-being.
