Communication and trustBy Terry KriegerCandidate for Board Member; Los Alamitos Unified School District | |

The district has been building walls between the teachers, parents, the board, and the administration. It's time to knock down those walls. There was a budget crisis in our school district last year at a time most school districts in this state were having a budget surplus. The crisis grew out of the District's long-standing, but illogical policy of being self-insured. Without providing adequate advance notice to parents, teachers and other interested parties, the District Administration planned and implemented layoffs of key professional personnel, including counselors, media center professionals, learning specialists, and others. Alternative measures to relieve the budget crisis were not given time to be developed. I believe that the school district and school board must find a way to restore these programs and positions so that the children receive the best possible education. Even worse, the handling of the crisis created an atmosphere of animosity, distrust, and disillusionment. The teachers and parents felt as if there were walls being built between them, the district, and the school board. I decided to run for school board to change the atmosphere and break down these walls. I seek to create practices and policies which make the District more open and transparent in its operations. After all, it is a public institution paid for with taxpayer monies. Major decisions, financial and academic, need to be properly discussed in public with all the affected parties, especially teachers and parents. The doors of communication need to be opened again. |
