Protect Music, Arts, and Other Student ProgramsBy Christopher K. "Chris" EmamiCandidate for Trustee; Orange Unified School District; Trustee Area 5 | |

It is of the utmost importance that the school district have programs in place for student development. The community cannot afford to lose the programs that are currently in place and the district must seek ways to bring additional programs to OUSD.During their time in office, the current board majority attempted to end the elementary music program which was saved only due to protests from parents and the board minority. Cutting elementary music would have been a great loss to the students and parents of OUSD. Most other districts in the county are able to fund elementary music programs. The board majority claimed there was not enough money available for elementary music even though they were paying millions for unproven consultants while the elementary music cost far less. As an OUSD student, I had participated in OUSD music for six years, athletics, academic pentathlon, and other student programs. At the elementary school level, it is vital that we use tools such as fine arts and other co-curricular activities to help children develop and improve their learning skills. Used in tandem with more academic subjects, they will add to a child's development. If the students really came first in OUSD, the consultants would have been cut in favor of music, rather than the other way around. |
