Expand Charter Schools and Programs to Make OUSD Academically Competitve

By Christopher K. "Chris" Emami

Candidate for Trustee; Orange Unified School District; Trustee Area 5

This information is provided by the candidate
OUSD does not perform as well as neighboring school districts with similar demographics. We must expand charter schools and find more programs that will make OUSD academically competitive.
Charter schools are an excellent way for parents to be a part of their children's education. Charter schools are a valuable asset in creating a positive educational environment. The current schools are respectable, but if we have the hubris to think that our district is competitive with similar districts, then we are mistaken. A substantial proportion of OUSD students are ending up at community colleges, not because they cannot afford to attend four-year universities but because they are not academically prepared to attend them.

OUSD students are leaving for schools in neighboring areas, such as Troy High School, Esperanza High School, and the Orange County High School of the Arts, because these schools possess programs that challenge students to a greater degree than OUSD schools do. The current board majority tried to revoke the charter at Santiago Charter School they felt that a change in leadership was necessary. This does was a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water. The children should not have to suffer because of mistakes made by the adult staff. We must always ensure that we keep the student in mind when decisions are made.
