Protect Our Farmland

By Phil Baldwin

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Ukiah

This information is provided by the candidate
This valley's existing agricultural land is critical for sustainability in the era of peak oil and climate change. Without the establishment of agricultural preservation easements New Urban planning cannot, in the face of never ending growth, prevent spill over sprawl.* As we determine the carrying capacity of this valley and challenge the State's growth imperative, we need to permanently greenbelt Ukiah by preserving existing farm land.

  • Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day: "Forging and maintaining a sustainable society is the critical challenge for this and all generations to come. In responding to that challenge, population will be the critical factor in determining whether or not we succeed in forging such a society."

  • Richard Heinberg, author of Power Down: "Ultimately, ignoring the population issue will be a catastrophe for human rights. Population pressure and resource depletion are not side issues; they are the issues."
