Cutter Highlights Her Commitment to Putting Children First in Seeking Third Term

Pauline Cutter, President of the Board of Education of the San Leandro Unified School District, has announced that she will seek re-election to a third term in the November 2006 general election.

"I have worked full time to raising my children and providing a quality education for hundreds of children and parents as a public school teacher," Cutter stated. "I have also devoted myself to improving San Leandro's schools. I am running for this seat again because I believe in putting children first."

Cutter is completing her eighth year on the board, serving five years as a board officer. For two consecutive years, Cutter has served as Board President, which is unprecedented in contemporary San Leandro Unified School District history.

"It is only through collaboration among board members, listening to and working with the community that we can accomplish our mission to provide the best possible education for our students," said Cutter.

Under Cutter's leadership, San Leandro's schools have obtained $48 million in matching funds from the state and other agencies for school construction projects. She was Chair of the Board's Facility Committee during the construction of the state-of-the-art science wing at San Leandro High School, the new Jefferson Elementary School, new classrooms at John Muir and Bancroft Middle Schools, as well as upgrades to all schools in the district.

Cutter takes pride not only in the progress of the district's facilities but also in the achievements of San Leandro High School's students, with greater numbers attending honors classes than ever before, and yielding nine national merit finalists in the last four years. The top two seniors in the Class of 2006 currently attend Harvard and Stanford universities.

"We have had championship sport teams, award winning school programs like AVID and DECA, outstanding music and performing arts productions, and have made substantial gains in our Academic Performance Index (API) test scores at the high school and throughout district," commented Cutter.

To continue improving school facilities, Cutter has led the effort to bring parents, teachers, business leaders and senior citizens together to develop a facilities plan that will resolve the overcrowding at San Leandro High School, expand the school library, modernize and renovate classrooms and student restrooms district-wide, as well as build a new Arts Education Center for theater, music and industrial arts.

Cutter's primary goals are to:

  • Transforming the high school into the flagship of the district through construction, programs and activities, through passage of Measure B, the school facilities bond;
  • Ensure the district is proactive with financial resources, making sure that every dollar is spent wisely and in alignment with its mission to educate kids; and
  • Continue engaging parents into their children's education, providing the greatest opportunities for student success.

For the past 15 years, Cutter has been a parent educator, director and classroom teacher at San Lorenzo Cooperative Pre-school, part of the San Lorenzo Unified School District. "Working with children and their parents on a daily basis re-enforces my belief in the need to involve parents or guardians in their children's education," said Cutter. "I also see the value in supporting teachers and schools in their work. When I leave this board, I would like the community to know that I did what I set out to do in an honest, collaborative and forthright way + with a bit of humor thrown in, of course. Most importantly, I would like my legacy to be that I made a positive difference in the lives of our children."
