A California native, Doug attended Grant Elementary School and Jordan High School. On graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper in Germany. He was discharged as a sergeant. He also chaired several important Long Beach City Council committees. Throughout his Long Beach career, Doug has involved himself in community service, as well. He has been President or Chairman of organizations including the Boys and Girls Club, Lions Club, and the American Red Cross, among others. Doug is also a part-time faculty member at Cal State Long Beach, President of the Historical Society of Long Beach, a Civil War memorabilia collector, and is a published author.
