On The Need for a Code of Corporate Responsibility

This a the text of a speech that I gave before the Huntington Beach City Council last Spring, asking that the city reconsider its business relationship with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company and create a code of corporate responsibility, similar to that on many college campuses, for large corporations that do business with the city. The actual speech may have been modified some at the last minute in order to meet the 3 minute time restriction during Public Comments.

My Position on Health Care Benefits and Collective Bargaining Rights for City Workers

This is the text of a speech that I had planned to give to the City Council last winter during the dispute between the Municipal Employees Association and the city over health care benefits. I did not give the speech, however, because a last minute agreement was reached prior to the public comments section of the meeting. Still, the text expresses my general views on how to deal with the cost of health care benefits and collective bargaining rights for city employees.

Water and the Public Trust Doctrine

These are two speeches I gave before the city council, one in November 03 and the other in Jan. 04 on the relationship of the proposed Poseidon desalination plant, the Public Trust Doctrine and the threat of water privatization under international treaties to our right to have democratic control of our water resources. The first speech was given prior to rejection of the Poseidon EIR, the second following the rejection by the council.
