Smart Voter Political Philosophy for John F Earl

Candidate for
Member, City Council; City of Huntington Beach

This information is provided by the candidate

Part 1:

Politically, I follow the key values of the Green Party, as adapted to Huntington Beach issues and conditions.

Part 2 (below): My pledge to oppose water privatization. ________________________________________________________

1) Ecological Wisdom: Understand that humanity is part of nature and that we need to protect its resources for our survival and a higher quality of life. Protect our wetlands, beaches, parks and water resources (ocean and drinking). Say "NO" to privatization of water resources, including NO to the Poseidon desalination plant.

2) Grassroots Democracy: Encourage greater participation in the local political process by all residents of our city, including immigrants, senior citizens, renters and youth.

3) Social Justice and Responsibility: A living wage for workers employed by large corporations like Wal-Mart and the HB hotels that benefit from "redevelopment" policies and tax subsidies. Do NOT do official city business with corporations, like Coca-Cola, that have been implicated in serious human rights violations in other countries or at home. NO to the use eminent domain to take property and NO to any redevelopment that does not directly benefit the residents of the city. NO to subsidies, including the misuse of affordable housing funds, for the benefit of corporations that don't need those subsidies anyway. Affordable housing money should go to people who need affordable housing, not to build hotel rooms for the Hilton corporation. Protect and openly respect the right of workers to organize and belong to unions. Finally, fight for the right of every person in our city to have affordable and secure housing.

4) Nonviolence: Oppose the war in Iraq because it is unjust and because it takes away resoures that could be used to improve the quality of life in our cities, including Huntington Beach.

5) Decentralization: "...a decentralized, democratic society with our political, economic and social institutions locating power on the smallest scale (close to home)that is effecient and practical..." Stop the state from taking away money that is meant for and vital to our cities.

6) Community Based Economics: I support the voluntary local implementation of the concept of "time dollars," not just as a means to mitigate for lost monetary funds, but to build a sense of belonging and caring in our community by providing and exchange of human services, such as caring for the elderly or children.

7) Respect for Diversity: Huntington Beach is a richly diverse community. We should respect that diversity, whether it is cultural, ethnic, sexual or religious. Our mayor should honor that diversity at city council meetings by recognizing the separation of Church and State as called for in the First Amendment to the US Consititution.

8) Global Responsibility: As residents of Huntington Beach, we have a responsibility to protect our natural resources for those who visit from outside our city as well as for ourselves. We should never knowingly or selfishly ignore the potential negative effect of our actions on others around us or far from us. We live in a global community now more than ever and should act accordingly.

9) Sustainability: We need to think of our long range future. Locally, we need to encourage and demand conservation of water and other natural resources (unncessary watering of HB lawns has risen drastically). We should promote water and engery conservation locally and throughout the state. We also should do our part in using known and proven alternative energy sources. As a city council member I will promote local legislation to require solor energy in all new homes.

10) Feminism: "Replace the cultural ethics of dominance and control with more cooperative ways of interacting." STOP balancing the HB city budget on the backs of single mothers: give more funding, not less, to Project Self-Sufficiency.

Part 2)

Candidate’s Pledge

I, John Earl:

Affirm that every human being has a right to clean, safe and affordable water in quantity and quality sufficient to life and basic economic needs, and pledge to create and uphold policies within Huntington Beach as well as support state, national and international policies that ensure that all individuals have equitable and affordable access to water and that no one is cut off from water supply due to inability to pay.

I affirm that citizens have a right to know about and take part in decision making regarding water resources and services and pledge to maintain a high degree of democracy and transparency in all water related policy making in order to protect this right;

I affirm that water is a common good that sustains all life, and that it must be protected as an essential part of the public trust. Water should never be treated as a for-profit commodity and should not be owned by private corporations or individuals.

I affirm the necessity of policies that improve the conservation and stewardship of our water resources for all living things present and future.
