My desire to enact change for the State of California was conceived in personal tragedy. Five years ago my husband of 27 years had his entire right leg amputated by the State's largest HMO instead of being given a common blood test to diagnose his condition, which was and is treatable with a simple blood thinning medication. This along with an acquired insight of how the binding arbitration process works led me into the world of healthcare reform. What I found was an alarming need for justice. I found out just how vulnerable and at risk the citizens of this state are. From this my activism was born.
I am currently a member of the Kaiser Permanente Reform Committee, Board Member of the Managed Care Reform Council (a non-profit organization), and Supervisor in charge of petition circulation for Santa Clara County for the Voluntary Health Plan Arbitration Act of 2004 (http://ctvhpaa.com). The purpose of these organizations is to help, educate and inform the public, and to bring justice back into managed care.
