Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Michael A. Sannella

Candidate for
Mayor; City of San Marcos

This information is provided by the candidate

A. Traffic Circulation: With new leadership at city hall I believe San Marcos has a true opportunity to improve traffic circulation throughout the entire city by revitalizing San Marcos Creek. San Marcos Creek can be developed into a beautiful, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use area while preserving the creek's natural state and improving traffic circulation as well. The development would bring road improvements to Discovery Street and San Marcos Blvd. In addition, City Hall must lead San Marcos into the future, making the city attractive to new businesses. As a planning commissioner, I voted to bring Fry's Electronics to San Marcos. With Fry's coming to San Marcos, road improvements on Grand Ave. are taking place and residents and visitors have a reason to drive on roads other than San Marcos Blvd. and Rancho Santa Fe. I will bring the leadership and vision to the council to revitalize San Marcos' downtown.

B. Managed Growth: As a planning commissioner I have made my record on growth clear to all of San Marcos. I believe that San Diego is facing a housing shortage crisis and that housing obtainable to first-time homebuyers and seniors on fixed incomes is almost non-existent. For these reasons, I believe strongly that City Hall must be proactive and creative to adequately meet housing needs. This needs to be done while providing safe and healthy neighborhoods, schools, parks, and open space to be enjoyed by future generations. I have the experience and leadership to take on such a challenge. As a planning commissioner I have respected the rights of property owners, have encouraged a diversity in housing types, and have succeeded in securing parks and open space - crucial ingredients to having a quality and healthy community.

C. Restore Leadership and Accountability to San Marcos Taxpayers: It's time to stop talking about taking care of our city's problems and to start acting on promises of the past twenty years. I'll provide new leadership for our future. Lack of leadership has placed our financial resources at risk. From the failed trash-to-energy plant to plans to partner with Enron, our City's finances have been repeatedly placed in jeopardy. The Mayor must be held accountable. I will balance San Marcos' budget. I will be accessible to San Marcos residents, local and regional leaders, and all who want to do business in San Marcos. As a planning commissioner, I have never turned down any resident, applicant, or member of city staff who have requested to meet with me. I will lead and work with, not against, my council colleagues for the betterment of San Marcos.
