The Healthcare District needs to take a greater role in the coodination and collaboration of health-related programs and services, particularly with the Desert Healthcare Foundation.
The Healthcare District receives approximately $2.2 million dollars in tax revenue each year. In addition, it has a net worth of over $35 million in assets. It is incumbent upon the District to aggressively invest in current and new programs which benefit the citizens of the Coachella Valley. This past year, of the $2.2 million, they only gave out grants totaling a little over $1 million. The rationale was that no one qualified asked for grant money. It is incumbent upon the District to be pro-active and provide the community with the information and tools to go about applying for grants. Requests for Proposals (RFPs)should be routinely generated to the public, which indicate what the District's sees as a health care priority and need and then what steps interested providers need to take to apply for funding from the District to meet those needs. Most recently the District has taken taken the first step but launching an information session on how to apply for grants. The timing of this initiative, right before the election, seems to most fortuitous, but where was that impetus over the past five years?
