A native of Martinez, Alan Hern attended Las Juntas Elementary, Martinez Junior High, and Alhambra High. Alan was Valedictorian of Alhambra High School's Class of 1989. He was elected Associated Student Body Vice-President and was Alhambra's representative to American Legion Boys State, an educational seminar designed to teach students about the operation of local, county, and state government. Alan lettered in three-sports at Alhambra, which included football, basketball, and baseball. He was the quarterback and MVP of the 1988 DFAL Champion football team. Alan was also a two-year team captain of both the basketball and baseball teams. Upon graduation, Alan received Congressman George Miller's nomination and was appointed to the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. He was selected to be a company commander twice at the Naval Academy, the second time during his senior year. As company commander, he was responsible for the military and academic performance of 120 midshipmen under his command. Alan graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1993 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. Alan served on Active Duty from 1993 to 1998, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1996-1997 aboard USS ANTIETAM, CG-54, (Guided Missile Cruiser), in support of Operation Southern Watch. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for superior performance as a supply officer aboard USS ANTIETAM. Alan was honorably discharged from the Navy in October of 1998 after serving his obligated service time. He returned to Martinez in 2000 and worked as a program manager for Solectron Corporation, an electronics contract manufacturer located in Silicon Valley. He currently works as a pharmaceutical sales representative in the East Bay. Alan and his wife of 8 years, Katherine, have one son, Aaron. |
