Management Instability at Long Beach City College

By Darwin R. Thorpe

Candidate for Member, Board of Trustees; Long Beach Community College District; Trustee Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
In the last three years, management instability has grown sufficiently to virtually stop planning on campus, and throw college budgeting practices into turmoil.
Top management has shown marked disrespect for botb faculty and support staff at LBCC. It has created a climate of fear and turmoil in the workplace, and high administrative turnover. The college has had three Vice Presidents of Academic Afffairs and three Vice Presidents of Administrative Services in the past four years. These positions remain vacant today. Quality and high standards cannot be sustained in this kind of environment.

The solution is rather simple. While a change in upper-level management is obviously called for, management observance of statutes requiring faculty and support staff participation in joint governance, and Board of Trustees' attention to the problems clearly in front of them, are non-cost ways to correct these problems.
