A New Education Coalition

By Darwin R. Thorpe

Candidate for Member, Board of Trustees; Long Beach Community College District; Trustee Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
Out of a community effort to educate the public on the recent Proposition 39 bond authorization Measure E arose a new Greater Long Beach Area Alliance for Education Excellence. This should serve as one instrument for focusing the larger community's desire for educational accountability and fiscal restraint.
My campaign has brought together former "enemies" in the world of education; teacher and support staff associations and unions, and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. Joining the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association in endorsing my effort are, the California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teachers, Committee on Political Education of the AFL/CIO-Calif., the California Democratic Party, the local Teachers Association of Long Beach, and Professors and staff support unions of Long Beach City College. Governmental institutions, private and civic associations, and unions, evolve after they have been set in motion. As time goes by, their missions change, sometimes well beyond those of their original incorporation, and certainly beyond the ugly press-distorted coverage of many of their original activities. Removing the press-created public mythology which tends to separate these natural allies, is one of my main concerns.

Business, industry, the unions, community groups, associations, and elected leaders MUST learn to sit down at the same table, reason together, and re-formulate the now crumbled partnerships in the service of education and job-training. This is the road to making Long Beach City College one of the best learning places anywhere.
