Curbing Education and Training Cost Inflation at Long Beach City College

By Darwin R. Thorpe

Candidate for Member, Board of Trustees; Long Beach Community College District; Trustee Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
My three-point plan for curbing inflation of education and training costs at Long Beach City College include a change in incentives for student progress, decentralizing college services, and working for equity in staff remuneration.
My plan for arresting inflated costs of education and training at LBCC include, 1) decreasing the five-year period students are now taking to earn the Associate of Arts or Science degrees by making student financial aid more accountable and competitive, with increases based on progress in learning and skill attainment, 2) moving college computers, counselors, instructional expertise and support staff out into the community...to the empty buildings, shop floors, and churches, to serve college students and parents where they work and live, and 3) stopping the spiraling costs of upper-level management salaries, which now average $115,000 annually, for the highest average salaries in the state in comparable colleges.
