Nancy was born on June 7, 1945 in Hammond, Indiana. Her father was a steelworker and her mother was, at the time of Nancy's birth, working in a defense plant. She has an older brother John who lives in Salinas. In l950 the entire family relocated to Fontana, California where her dad began work at Kaiser Steel where he was a member of the United Steelworkers. Nancy's Mom had partially completed nursing school before her marriage and in l957 she returned to school and obtained her college degree and her R.N. She was already working for Kaiser Hospital which later became Kaiser Permanente. She retired after 35 years of service as the Director of Nursing. Her Dad passed away in l990 and her Mom passed away in 1998 while living in Salinas to be near Nancy and her family.

Nancy attended public schools in Fontana and graduated from Fontana High School in l963. Among other things, she was the Junior Class President, the Senior Class President, was very involved in the National Forensic League, was a champion debater (she and her partner finished 5th in California), had the lead in the Junior Class Play, was a Life Member of the California Scholarship Federation and when she graduated was honored with the Leetzow Award as the Most Outstanding Graduate in the Class of l963.

Nancy followed in the steps of her favorite high school teacher Mrs. Alice Shafer and attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin. Ripon was the National Headquarters of the National Forensic League. She was a champion debater in college as well, was President of People-To-People, was President of her sorority Kappa Delta and was President of Panhellenic. She graduated in l967 with a Bachelor's Degree in History and Political Science. During summer vacations she worked at Kaiser Steel in Fontana, California as a member of the United Steelworkers.

In l970 she enrolled at Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas, Texas. While at SMU she met her husband, Jim, who was one year ahead of her in his law studies. Nancy belonged to Kappa Beta Pi Legal Sorority and received the American Jurisprudence Award in Criminal Law. She graduated in May l970 with a Juris Doctor Degree, took and passed the Texas Bar Exam and on July 25, 1970 she and Jim were married in her hometown of Fontana.

Jim graduated from SMU Law School in l969 and after graduation had begun a job as an Attorney for the Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington, D.C. After their marriage in Fontana in l970 they established a home in Arlington, Virginia and Nancy started her legal career as an Attorney with the United States Department of Agriculture.

Nancy stayed at the USDA until March of l971. Jim was called to active duty with the United States Army in January 1971and after his initial training they were assigned to Fort MacArthur, California. In August l975 Nancy accepted a direct Commission as a Captain in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.

Nancy served on active duty for four years. She served in Vietnam. She is the recipient of numerous military awards and decorations including the Bronze Star. She remained in the U.S. Army Reserve for an additional six years.

Nancy was in private practice in Monterey and Pacific Grove from l975-l983. In 1983 she joined the Monterey County Public Defender's Office. She retired from that position in December l999 and returned to private practice in Pacific Grove.

Nancy and Jim are the proud parents of Timothy and Meaghan. Tim is a Junior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona where he is studying to become a commercial pilot. He began studying for his Private Pilot's license while still in high school. He had his first solo a week after his high school graduation. He got his license a month later. Meaghan is a Junior in high school and plays Field Hockey and Softball. She has her own radio show on the school radio station.
