Affordable Housing

By Leonard M. Surratt

Candidate for Council Member, Chair 5; City of Modesto

Can your Children Afford to live here?
In my 12 years living in Modesto, I have seen a drastic distortion in growth due to poor planning for traffic control, parks, playgrounds, affordable community recreation for our families and good paying year round jobs. The people who have been the backbone to our community are being priced out of the area or can't even afford to make that next move up. Small Business can't even afford employees, because they can't afford to pass the cost onto their customers. I want to get the scale back in balance. Let's not end up like the bigger cities, where their employees are flocking to our community, because they too have been priced out of their own cities. Currently, the only affordable housing that I see being built in Modesto, for our community are spoty areas in an established neighborhood, where there are a few building lots. This is a very small percentage. Most of the houses being built today are 2000 to 2800 square feet. I feel these are too large for our community, in terms of affordable housing. Both of my daughters can barely make their rent payments on a small apartment. The average rent is $600 - $800. I see a need to build more affordable single family dwellings.
