FAIR DISTRIBUTION OF TAX DOLLARS

By Dennis Scott Zell

Candidate for Board Member; Burlingame School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Our District Must Lead an Effort to Add a Cost of Living Adjustment to the Sacramento Tax Distribution Formula.
Currently, our local tax dollars are sent to Sacramento and then pennies are redistributed back to our district. In essence Sacramento pays us a flat rate (currently about $5,000) per student, per year. That amount is then adjusted down by a variety of factors including the number of absences a student has.

We need more of those pennies back from Sacramento.

The quickest and best way to get those pennies is to change the law so that the cost of living in a community is taken into account when establishing the initial flat rate per student. This would mean expensive communities such as ours in the Bay Area would receive more funding than low cost communities out in the rural areas.

It costs more to live in San Mateo County than Yuba County. Common sense dictates that districts in San Mateo County should receive more of its tax dollars back so that they can afford to pay their teachers a reasonable wage.

If elected, I will organize other districts who stand in our shoes and demand a change in the law.

The extra pennies we gain could add up to be millions!
