SMALL LOT SUBDIVISIONS

By Thomas L. "Tom" Sutro

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Costa Mesa

This information is provided by the candidate
Development standards for small lot subdivisions will be an issue that must be dealt with in the next few months. I am concerned that if we downzone residential lots to allow only single-family detached homes that owner occupied housing in Costa Mesa will become unaffordable. I am in favor of lots that are less than the 6,000 square foot but offer a minimum of 400+/- square feet of private yard and additional open space.

Traffic, density and compatibility with surrounding properties must be taken into consideration when new developments are reviewed.

Currently, approximately 58% of the residences in Costa Mesa are occupied by renters. While many families that rent take great pride in the exterior of their homes, townhomes, condiminums or apartments, some do not. I would like to see more owner occupied residences in the city.
