Water Treatment Plant

By Ed Hamlin

Candidate for Director; Golden Hills Community Services District

This information is provided by the candidate
The cost of an unusable water treatment plant is a burden on the ratepayers. We need to work with the state to remove this debt, or obtain funds to upgrade the plant to meet standards.
The current status of the water treatment plant is unacceptable. Other than a few storage tanks and pumps, the system is unusable in its current configuration. Yet there is a continued debt of nearly three quarters of a million dollars, a bill that is being paid by the citizens of Golden Hills who receive nearly no benefit from it.

I am not blaming anyone for the fact that the plant can't be used - it was built to meet standards that have since been made stricter. However, I think that much could be done to relieve the Golden Hills ratepayers of this unnecessary burden.

Mr. Kennedy has stated that he would go to Sacramento and lobby for the state to pay off this debt (California has a fund for such mandated costs). I strongly support this position, and I believe that it should be a TOP PRIORITY of the next board.

Additionally, we should look into the availability of funds for upgrading or replacing the treatment plant. An improved plant would allow Golden Hills to obtain water from the Brite Lake project and deliver it directly to our community. This would remove any fears regarding capacity or water quality for the foreseeable future.
